「生きるための熱」スポーツにかける入所者たちポスター

Sports were popular among the residents at Leprosy sanatorium. Athletic meets were already being held in some sanatoriums as early as 1910 (Meiji 43), and by around 1925 (Taisho 14), baseball, tennis, table tennis, sumo, and other sports were being held. These continued after a hiatus during the Pacific War until the 1960s, when an increasing number of residents were being reintegrated into society. After the war, volleyball, softball, badminton, and other new sports also appeared, and from the late 1970s, gateball became popular in all sanatoriums.
The residents needed something to get their blood pumping, to feel alive in the sanatorium where only limited space and choices are allowed, and to have time to forget, even if only temporarily, that they were patients or Former leprosy patients. They needed something to immerse themselves in and to interact with others on an equal footing, to find a purpose in life and make their recovery a little more fulfilling, and to have a chance to interact with society. For the residents, sports were more than just entertainment; they were something they needed to live.
It is our hope that through this exhibition, visitors will be able to feel the "passion for life" that the residents have for sports.

Baseball discussion "Oh (Ah)Shinrada (I'm irritated)Report on the "Classroom Baseball Club!!"

From 1:30 pm on Sunday, December 4thOku (back)high schoolShinrada (I'm irritated)A large number of people participated in a hot baseball discussion held by former members who were active in the classroom powerhouse baseball club. From the 1930s to the 1960s, baseball was the most exciting sport in each sanatorium, and I strongly felt the "heat to live" for a sport that burned passion and found a purpose in life.
