Mental health -Creative activities during isolation-

[Period]
September 27, 2007 (Heisei 19)(soil)From November 30th(Day)

At some point, people turn to poetry, crafts, arts, etc. as a hobby or a way to enjoy their free time, and some even make a living from it.
Back when Hansen's Disease was called "leprosy," a diagnosis of the disease was also called a "leprosy sentence." After being diagnosed, patients were isolated in a sanatorium, and when they learned that this would continue for the rest of their lives, many of the residents felt despair and thought "maybe I'm not needed by society," feeling that their existence had become meaningless, and they were unable to even find a purpose in life. Life in a sanatorium was a struggle with the meaning of life.
However, before long, as you accept and look at yourself as you are, you will realize that you still have some remaining power, and a faint hope or wish will surely begin to grow within you, such as, "I want to create something with my own hands" or "I want to try and see what I can do."
Discovering and creating "something" that is "my true self." This became my driving force and strength in life. Despite disabilities in my limbs and eyesight, I picked up brushes, pens, spatulas, needles, pieces, Go stones, musical instruments... and before I knew it, I found meaning in life.
Each and every study, each and every stitch, each and every melody is an attempt to mend a wounded and withered heart. The works and activities born from this process show that no matter how crushed they may be, they believe in their own strength and worth, and find pride in their work. We hope that this exhibition will bring a ray of hope to you.
