Tama Zenshoen once had a Korean dance gathering called "Arirang Society" for Korean residents of Japan.
"We feel nostalgic for our hometowns and want to dance in beautiful costumes," said one resident, who approached Korean dancer Kim Sun-ja for advice. The group was launched in 1990 and continued its activities until 2005.
Through the precious footage of performances from that time and a performance by Kim Sun-ja, who taught Korean dance, we hope you will trace the history of the Arirang Society and recall the members' passion for their activities.

Korean traditional dancer, Kim Sun-ja, Director of the Korean Traditional Arts Institute, National Intangible Cultural Property No. 92 of Korea, Director of the Taipingmu Preservation Society Tokyo Branch, Japan
Born in Miyagi Prefecture, he is a second-generation Korean resident of Japan. He became seriously involved in Korean cultural and artistic activities at the age of 18, and has been actively performing in numerous shows both at home and abroad for over 50 years.
In 2005, he received the Korean Folk Culture and Arts Award.

On Saturday, March 30, 2019, amidst the cherry blossoms blooming in spring, The National Hansen's Disease Museum held a "Arirang Kai" tracing the history of the group through rare videos.
The event consisted of two parts: first, a video showing a performance of the "Arirangkai," a Korean dance group that used to be held at Tama Zenshoen (a Korean dance group mainly composed of residents of Tama Zenshoen that continued from 1990 to 2005), followed by a gorgeous dance performance by Ms. Kim Sun-ja and other members of the Korean dance troupe. • Actually, this museum was a very high threshold for me. While studying the history of the past, I am also attracted to the bad points of the Japanese people, and I have discrimination and prejudice. I was finally able to visit this place while learning with the people around me. Thank you for the wonderful event.
• This time, I participated and learned the deep meaning hidden in "dancing". I learned that it is not only fun, but also suffering and sadness, and a strong feeling for my homeland. The performance was much more powerful and very interesting than I saw in the video. Everyone was very beautiful and the costumes and hairstyles were also very beautiful. There were powerful and elegant dances, and I enjoyed them. I was surprised to be walking like a slip. I would like to see it again if I have the opportunity.

• I am a teacher at a Korean school. I participated in this event with my mother. Hansen's Disease little knowledge of Hansen's disease, I think that the people living in Japan have lived with ethnic discrimination and double discrimination, recognizing that discrimination still remains after participating in this event. My heart hurts. As someone who has danced Korean dance, I wanted to dance and sing along with them someday.
