1st International Hansen's Disease Policy Symposium
"Medical policy on leprosy and Archives - Japan and Norway"

The city of Bergen in Norway is the birthplace of Dr. Armauer Hansen, who discovered Mycobacterium leprae in the late 19th century. Norway based its research on epidemiology on the basis of Medical science of leprosy in the first half of the 20th century.
This symposium will invite three researchers from a research institute in Bergen who are conducting historical research on Medical policy on leprosy to give special lectures on the value of Hansen's Disease historical materials collected and preserved locally and what we should learn from them. In addition, in the panel discussion, a Norwegian researcher and a former patient (currently a member of the museum's steering committee) who was involved in the establishment and operation of Prince Takamatsu Memorial Hansen's Disease Museum (currently The National Hansen's Disease Museum), a pioneering institution in Japan for the preservation of historical materials on Hansen's Disease, will discuss why historical materials Hansen's Disease must be preserved. We hope to make this a symposium that will learn from Norway, a pioneer in the collection and preservation of historical materials Hansen's Disease, and clarify the significance of the existence of The National Hansen's Disease Museum and the challenges it faces in the future. Consecutive interpretation will be used for both the special lectures and the panel discussions to ensure smooth communication between participants.
